Jay Walters is the Vice President of Rockit Pest, a rapidly expanding pest control company with operations in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. With over 380 vehicles on the road and a growing number of technicians in the field, Jay is responsible for making sure Rockit’s fleet runs efficiently and cost-effectively.
As Rockit Pest scaled through acquisitions, their fueling program became increasingly complex and increasingly costly. That’s when Jay knew it was time to find a better solution.
The Challenges
Legacy systems created complexity, weren’t built for growth, and offered limited savings.
Rocket Pest had outgrown Wex’s platform. Jay Walters and his team at Rocket Pest struggled with multiple pain points while using Wex:
- Cumbersome card management: Merging acquisitions led to six separate sub-accounts in Wex. Ordering or locating the correct card meant searching through multiple logins without a centralized view. “If I needed a card, I had to find the right sub-account. There was no master search. It was just rough,” Jay explains.
- Costly delays replacing lost cards: Replacing lost cards took 5–10 business days, or cost $25 for expedited shipping. With a fleet of 380 vehicles and constant card turnover, delays impacted field productivity.
- Limited theft prevention: Fuel theft was difficult to catch. Detecting misuse required analysts to cross-check fuel logs, tank sizes, and fill-up frequencies manually, an unreliable and time-consuming process. “If a location has 50 vehicles and one person is stealing fuel, it’s not going to move the budget enough to even know,” Jay describes.
- Insufficient spend controls: Despite policies, drivers still often made unauthorized purchases, such as car washes or in-store items, due to inadequate controls. Jay says, “Guys are in their trucks all day, it’s their mobile office. If the card lets them buy something, they will.”
Rockit Pest was ready to switch providers, so when Jay met Coast at a pest control conference, the timing was ideal.
The Solution
Smarter controls, a seamless rollout, and real-time accountability.
Rockit Pest chose Coast for four key reasons, all of which aligned with the needs of their enterprise fleet:
- Telematics integration with Azuga: Coast’s integration with Azuga provides real-time, geo-fenced fuel card activation, allowing fueling only when the vehicle is confirmed to be physically present at the fueling location.
- Text-based authorization: Instead of PINs, drivers authorize transactions via text on their company phone. This cuts down on lost PIN issues and adds another layer of control.“If someone quits and leaves the card in the truck, it doesn’t matter. Without their phone, they can’t use it and get fuel,” Jay explains.
- Powerful spend controls: Coast’s precise transaction restrictions at the pump prevented unauthorized extras like car washes and snacks, strictly enforcing company policies.
- Easy, phased rollout: Coast’s intuitive, user-friendly system and proactive support team (special recognition to Ashley) streamlined the implementation process, training, and ongoing troubleshooting. Rockit Pest implemented Coast’s card program in a matter of weeks.
The Results
✅ Annual savings of $30,000-$50,000, just from improved rebates alone
✅ Unauthorized purchases, like car washes or in-store items, are eliminated, thanks to Coast’s effective spend controls
✅ Automated reporting across 14 branches, giving managers direct visibility into fuel activity by vehicle and employee
✅ Fuel theft prevention with geofencing and telematics rules in place
When asked what he’d tell another pest control operator, Jay didn’t hesitate:
